Memorial Day....everyday?

I'm a little late in publicly saying how thankful I am for all of the people who serve, have served and will serve our country.  Monday was the official day to honor those amazing individuals, but we should hold them with the highest esteem and honor, everyday (and I've fallen behind in pictures and posts:).

So, happy Memorial Day!

Vampire baby

This is Griffin, my 13 month old Vampire baby.

You see, he's got his two bottom teeth, and if you look closely enough, he got a few teeth on top too....the "outsiders."
Griffin has been pretty traditional in all of his milestones.  He rolled over when they said he would, sat up when they said he would, walked when they said he would, but he got his teeth in a pretty random order.
It started out pretty normal.  Two bottom teeth.  Then he got those Vampire Teeth.  They are not the actual incisors, but they sure look it on that sweet little baby face.
They are quite hard to see, except when he smiles, which is most of the time, though still hard to capture on camera.

It's a lot easier to capture the pout and scowl, which he has also mastered.  But soon he will be Vampire Baby no more....his top two teeth have broken through and soon he'll be ready to show off his new bright white smile.

Tiger Woodbury

Griffin's love affair with golf began on the day of his birth.  We were in the hospital the weekend of the Master's 2011.  I couldn't tell you a thing about that tournament even though we had it on most of the weekend...I guess I had other things on my mind.

This year, we turned the Master's on and Griffin was enthralled.  Here he is watching Tiger....saying, "ball, ball, ball."

For his birthday he got his first set of golf clubs and wiffle golf balls.  He loves them.  He knows they are golf balls, but calls them "ball balls."  His new favorite game is to hit them around the yard.  In this pic he's got out his driver, but we spend plenty of time on his short game as well.

When he sees golf on TV or even when he's swinging his clubs around he says, "swish, swish," imitating the sound of a swing.

Sometimes after his nap when I go in to get him, he's just in there talking to himself, "swish, swish-ing."  Don't they say that good golfers visualize their swing?  Well I'm pretty sure Griff dreams of golf, which would be fine by us....what better sport to be a parent fan of?  Traveling to gorgeous locals, walking 6 miles and enjoying the beautiful scenery?  I just hope I get to be his caddy.

The Zoo

A week ago Saturday morning Nate and I decided to take Griff to the zoo.  We went to the Como Zoo in St. Paul, which is technically free, but they do accept donations to help upkeep the place.  It was a chilly Saturday morning, but perfect for the zoo, since it wasn't too crowded and the animals were all pretty lively.

This was Griffin's face for the first 10 minutes upon entering the zoo and watching the giraffe and zebras.

Look at that scowl.
He couldn't even tear himself away for a picture with dada.
It would be pretty cool to see these things in person for the first time, after only having read about them in books.

Next we headed over to the tigers.  This guy was roaming the place and was hard to get close to.

Then we went to the bears.  The grizzlies were all out and about playing, swimming and chasing each other.

Griff loved watching them underwater.

Then the polar bears.  Man, they were huge!  The zookeepers had put carrots in the top of the fence so they would stand up to get them.  We were all in awe at their amazing height!

We also saw buffalo, who were pretty uneventful....

The sleeping mama lion....
The sleeping dada lion....

The roaming wolf...

And a ton of others including ducks, primates, fish, birds and sea lions (who always entertain me!).  It was a great first time at the zoo, we can't wait to go back!

More Free Art

Awhile back I used some fabric in some old frames to make some new fun (and cheap) art.  Well, I decided to do it again, this time using some wrapping paper I had saved from Christmas.

It was on a gift I got from my mom, I think it originally came from Pottery Barn.

So I just took apart some old frames...
Cut two new pieces and viola!
I don't have a ton of red in my house, but my mom has a sun room that is red and cream, so I'm thinking that they will look better there than at my house, as darling as they are!

Bye Bye Nuk

A few weeks ago, without knowing it, we went a few days without a nuk (except at naptime).  We decided right then and there that we were done with the nuk.  So far, Griff has done very well.  We do still have one attached to a little bunny in his crib, if he get's lucky or smart enough to find it, bonus for him!

Occasionally when he wakes up from his naps, he points to the little nuk basket that sits on his dresser and tries to ask for one.  When I do catch him with the bunny nuk which he tries to take with him out of his crib, we just say "bye bye nuk," and he's ok with it.

I miss the nuk when he falls or bonks his head, it was clutch in getting him to calm down faster, but I've noticed that since giving it up, he needs even less calming down....maybe he is learning to self sooth.

I had read somewhere that if you give it up by 15 months, it isn't too difficult on the little kiddos and then it's not a very strong habit to break (I definitely didn't want to be bribing him with a bike in order to get rid of it, like someone whose genes he shares....ahemm....Nate...).

And as a bonus, his sweet little mug is no longer hidden behind that silly plastic nuk!

Mother's Day Boxes

For Mother's Day this year, instead of wrapping gifts like you normally would, I decided to make my own gift boxes.

All you need:  scissors, tape, old shoe boxes, wrapping paper and/or fabric.

I happen to like to save cool wrapping paper, it's the recycler/reuser in me, so I went with some of the wrapping paper I had saved over the years, as well as some fabric I cut off the bottom of our Ikea curtains to hem them at the right length.

Then just wrap the boxes with the fabric or wrapping paper...

And there you have it!  3 Mother's Day boxes (filled with goodies) for my 3 wonderful mothers! (Mom, Step-Mom, Mother-In-Law:)

PS-Birthday Suit

I know it's way past Griffin's first birthday, in fact he's now officially 13 months old.  But I forgot to mention his birthday outfit.   I had found this adorable madras fabric and had to do something with it.  I decided first to make Griffin a birthday suit....so he wouldn't have to be in his birthday suit. :)

I just whipped up a pair of big butt pants (they are getting easier and easier to make), and I sewed a "1" onto his white polo that is no longer really white, so I didn't really care if it got ruined.

An alternate title to this post could be, "I want to go outside, but my Mommie says it's raining so we have to stay in side and do a photo shoot."

I did let him out on the porch...to mow the rug....
He loves to put gas in his mower, which he calls "ball" because of the wheels.....it's a stretch but they do look like balls a little bit!
When the drool had soaked through his first shirt, I just popped on another polo that looks equally as cute with his new madras pants.
....don't know what this face is....
 ....or this one...
....I have an idea of what this face is, use your imagination....
....yup, you were right...and now he's uncomfortable.
The only thing that could make it better is to go outside....
But Mommie's not going to let me....

Anywhoo....since I had some leftover fabric I decided to make a birthday banner.  I traced the letters on to the back of the durabond adhesive, ironed it onto the fabric, cut out the letters and then ironed them on to some flags I had cut out of blue fabric (in hindsight I should have used a lighter color for the background, as the "happy birthday griffin" was a little hard to see).
I used clothespins to attach the flags to a piece of ribbon and hung it in our porch with some balloons on either side.  It will definitely be reusable for each of Griffin's birthdays!
